The Cape Fear Boys Soccer team played two conference games this week, they played on Monday, October 6th against Scotland High School, and yesterday against Lumberton High School.
The JV Colts started off the first half strong against the Scots putting in 4 goals to shut down Scotland in the first half.
Sophomore Brant Freeman played a huge role for the Colts in the first half putting in 2 of the 4 goals.
The Colts continued to dominate on both sides of the pitch in the second half, putting in 3 more goals to finish off the game with a 7-0 win.
This was the Colts 4th shut out of the season.
The Varsity boys played later in the night and were ready to add another win to their undefeated conference record.
The Colts started off strong with Senior Gage Mosley scoring in the first two minutes to put the boys up early. The Colts had many more chances in the half with many great shots, unfortunately they were unable to find the back of the net.
In the second half the Colts were able to capitalize on the chances they were creating with sophomore Gavin Noopon putting two more composed finishes past the keeper. By the time the fulltime whistle blew the Colts had controlled the game and rarely allowed the opponents into the Colts’ half. The boys walked away with a confident 3-0 win and sat first in the conference with a 5-0 record.
Yesterday both teams hit the road, taking on the Lumberton Pirates for a huge conference match up.
The JV Colts had a rough start allowing the Pirates to put 3 goals past them. The Colts later capitalized on a goal opportunity to put the score at 3-1.
The Colts then continued to fight hard and persevere through the first half putting in 3 more goals to put the halftime score at a 4-3 lead for the Colts.
In the second half, the Colts’ defense took control, not allowing many shots and didn’t allow any goals. Shutting down Lumberton in the second half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Desjardin played a huge role in this matchup late into the game, making key saves.
“I was proud of my performance and my team’s performance to help maintain our lead and keep the ball out of the goal,” said Desjardin.
Lumberton received an in-direct free kick opportunity with 29 seconds left to play, but the Colts’ defense once again allowed no chance for Lumberton clearing the ball away to end all hope for Lumberton and end the game.
The Varsity Colts played later in the evening and were hoping to replicate their previous victory over Lumberton when they played their first conference game.
The Lumberton and Cape Fear rivalry in soccer has been a big game the last few seasons and this game would yet again not disappoint the fans.
The Colts started strong and controlled the game. This was shown after Sophomore Gavin Noopon scored a back heel goal off a throw-in to put the Colts up 1-0. The boys would capitalize one more time before the halftime whistle with an excellent cross from Senior Cameron Trumbull being tapped in the net by the Colts. The halftime whistle blew with the Colts leading 2-0.
The boys did not let up and had many great chances in the second half. Lumberton would find a goal but it wouldn’t be enough in the end as the boys locked down the Pirates to end the game with a 2-1 win. The Colts continue to sit 1st in the conference with a record of 6-0.
“If we keep playing the way we have been playing I think we’ll make a good run and win the rest of our games to win the conference,” said team captain Ryan Fisher.
Make sure to come out next Tuesday, October 14th, to watch the Colts play another conference game against Purnell Swett in Colt Country.
