The Cape Fear Colts volleyball team concluded their regular season with two challenging matches this week, demonstrating both resilience and teamwork. On Tuesday, October 14th, the Colts traveled to Pine Forest to face off against the Trojans. This match was a quick one as the Colts secured the victory in three short sets, 25-13, 25-15, and 25-17. They showed off with quick tempoed plays and aggressive serves.
“Our victory against Pine Forest was extremely rewarding. The opportunity to run plays off of free balls was definitely taken advantage of by our offense and we also get more positional freedom as we play teams that can’t defend us,” said Junior starting Outside Addison Gunter.
The following day, the Colts faced the Pinecrest Patriots in another intense game. This match was a thriller with points going back and forth, with both teams giving their best fight. Despite their best efforts, the Cape Fear Colts gave it their best and sadly came up short after taking the Patriots to four sets, 23-25, 25-17, 23-25, and 22-25.
“Overall yesterday the team’s offense and defense just didn’t click, energy was low, and we couldn’t keep the momentum going. However the game was still tight and hardfought we just didn’t come out on top,” said starting Sophomore setter Sophia Wilson.
Overall the Colts finished their regular season 15-7 and their conference record was 8-2. They finished second in the conference with Gray’s Creek ahead of them. They are moving into playoffs this Saturday and are hoping for a bye, but after last night’s loss it may become a setback in their seeding for the playoff bracket. This would mean the team would open with a first round match, most likely at home.
With the regular season officially coming to an end, the Cape Fear Colts can reflect on their experiences and games as they now enter the state playoffs. The team aims to build on their strengths and overcome weaknesses as they give their best efforts into the playoffs.
