On Saturday November 1st, the Cape Fear Colts ran at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville for the NCHAA State Championship. This was the last race of the season, where Cape Fear had 2 boys represent the Colts at this meet. This was a new course which made it difficult to predict what was coming ahead, regardless the Colts persevered and finished strong. This was a great way for these boys to end their season.
“Last weekend we went to states, it was our first trip as coaches there. We got to take 2 very talented runners, they represented the school well and got a good learning experience. We look forward to taking them as well as other runners next season, hopefully we can keep on expanding. The season as a whole was a success, probably the best season we’ve had. It was a great experience and we are going to be sad to see some runners go but we look forward to the future of the team,” said Coach Demchock.
The boys couldn’t place as a team because you need to have 7 runners to qualify as a team, but individually Collin Shick was the first to finish placing 90th with a time of 17:33. Collin managed to keep the competition away, beating the next runner by 0.11 of a second. Collin has been a part of this team for 2 years and has consistently been a top runner for the Colts. He has had a great season and will continue to run for the Colts during the winter and spring. This was a fantastic year for Collin.
“I was excited to make it to the states after a long season and a slow start. To make states I knew I needed to get top 25 at regionals and I got 18th. At states I didn’t have my best race, but I tied my personal record from last year. I am happy how my season went as a whole,” said Collin.
Chris Shick was the second boy to qualify for states. He finished with a 17:37 and placed 94th. Just 4 spots away from his twin brother. Chris has also been with the team for 2 years and has been a captain for both of those years. He also has been a consistent top runner for the team with him and his brother competing for the top spot. He will be running indoor and outdoor track just like his twin. This was a perfect way for him to end his junior year off. Both boys have done great things this season and will continue to work hard all year.
“States went ok, decently not the race I wanted to end my year on, but I’m extremely grateful that I had the opportunity to run there. I’m excited to learn from my mistakes and come back better next year. The year went really well overall, it was a slow start to the season, but I was able to pick it up at the end when it really mattered and was able to medal at conference and qualify for states, which has been my goal since I started cross country,” said Chris.
These boys had a great showing on Saturday, with a new competitive course and competition it made for a great race to finish off the season. The entire team has done great, hitting new accomplishments and personal records. These 2 boys made sure to represent the Colts with true Colt pride and ensure the team had a great end to their season. We can’t wait to see what the team brings next year.
