It’s that time of year again. As fall sports dwindle down, that doesn’t mean that Colt Pride does too. Instead, it rolls over into winter, as the Colts get ready for the winter sports season. One of Cape Fear’s most accomplished programs is the Boys basketball program, in which this season is set to be one to remember.
Last season, the Colts were 11-11 overall with a finish of 8-6 in their conference. They were ranked 4th in the 3a/4a United 8 Conference. With a new season starting the Colts are also entering a new conference, the inaugural Tri-County Conference. Cape Fear is excited to see how winter sports will take on this conference and to see what this season will hold for them.
Coach Rico Mitchell will be returning as the Varsity Head Coach for his 2nd season. After stepping into the role as head coach last season, he is ready to start this season, striving to do better than ever before. With many returners, he is ready to keep building the team chemistry that was established last season, and watch it take off during game play this year. His returners are Jackeal Williams, Joshua Green, Geronimo Sanchez, Courtland Brady Kennedy, Dylan Parker, Chosen Wynn, Tommy Daughtry, Julius Lucas, Carter Edwards, Marcelous Freeman, and Daniel Wynn. Four newcomers have been added to the bunch as well. They are Josiah Taylor, James Todd, Ge’lan Hicks, and Jamar Godwin. This is a big squad, with a lot of effort and promising talent.
Varsity Boys Basketball unfortunately came up short last season and did not make it to playoffs. Through the disappointment, they used this hardship to not only put in the work during preseason, but use it to fuel their determination to come back stronger this season. During preseason the boys basketball team has been training harder than ever to improve their defense, teamwork, and overall consistency on the court. These Colts are eager to start the season and leave their mark in Colt Country.
“I’m excited for this season, it will be my last one. I think we will be better this season than we were last season. I feel like this season the chemistry will be better- we will be more unified,” said Geronimo Sanchez.
“This season our expectations are to make a playoff run. We know that we have the talent to do so. The whole locker room knows what we are capable of,” remarks Senior Brady Kennedy.
“Last season we didn’t do that great. We didn’t have a great chemistry, but I think this season we do. We’ve gotten closer, are ready to have a fun time, and work on making it to playoffs,” said Senior Chosen Wynn.
This season for Boys Basketball is set to be one to remember. This group is focused and ready to showcase their talent. Last season didn’t go as the team had hoped, but they are using those challenges as fuel to set the tone for this season. With a new mindset and the drive to win, the boys are ready to hit the court this Thursday, November 20th at Douglas Byrd High School.
