On Thursday November 20th, the Cape Fear Colts swim team had their first meet at Fayetteville State University; they crushed the competition. This meet marked the first chance to test the waters, and the team showed how they are prepared for a competitive and promising season. This meet sets the tone for the rest of the season showing the teams determination for the win.
“I think the meet went swimmingly. It gave the new swimmers much needed meet experience as well as showed our areas of improvement going forward. I am looking forward to a fantastic season,” said Coach Woolard.
In event 12, the boys 100yd butterfly, the Colts went back-to-back 1st and 2nd place. Luke Bailey secured the win with a 1:25. Soon after Landon Anderson came 2nd with a time of 1:45. These boys did a great job especially since this is only their second year swimming and the first time they’ve swam the 100yd butterfly.
In events 15 and 16, the girls and boys 500yd freestyle, had 2 swimmers in each event. The girls 500 was first with Anamarie Brenes placing 1st with a time of 7:06. Lucy Brinker followed shortly after placing 2nd with a time of 8:12. In the boys 500 Nick Serbio placed 1st with a time of 7:29 and Declan McGarry came 3rd with a time of 8:05. This is the longest individual event by 300 yards and is very tiring, but these swimmers persevered and did such a fantastic job keeping the top spot.
“I won the 500 which is wild considering I spent half the race questioning my life choices. I didn’t realize I was winning, I was just trying not to pass out. We have a ton of new guys on the team but because of this we had a lot of success yesterday which is really promising for our team’s future,” said team Captain Nick.
In event 19, the girls 100yd backstroke, the Colts once again took home another win. Amelia Osornio placed 1st with a time of 1:19 and Izabella Kelley came 2nd with a time of 1:38 beating off a Lumberton swimmer by 2 seconds. This was a great way for the Colts to add 37 points to their score helping secure the win.
In the last event of the day the meet combined events 23 and 24, the 400yd, the girls and boys team both placed 1st. The girls relay was composed of Lucy Brinker, Amelia Osornio, Lainey Williams, and Anamarie Brenes. The girls finished in a time of 4:48. The boys relay was Landon Anderson, Luke Bailey, Isaak Fick, and Nick Serbio. They finished in a time of 4:55. All 8 of these swimmers did a great job and this was a perfect way for the Colts to end the meet off.
“Even with a Mixed 400 relay we managed to come first even beating the boys. Our time was one of our best and with this being our first meet I think we will continue to improve. The entire team pushed each other to do our very best and we all did just that,” said Team Captain Anamarie.
The girls team swept the board placing 1st with a total of 381 points. The boys had a total of 299 points and placed 2nd. They ended the meet with a combined score of 680, beating the second place team by 80 points. Our Colts displayed their hard work and progression and took home the win for Cape Fear!
