The Cape Fear Girls Basketball Team had a tough week last week facing challenging teams both at home and away. The Colts started the week off on the road against the Clinton Dark Horses on Monday December 1st.

The Dark Horses left the gate quickly, jumping out to a 6-31 lead in the first quarter. The Colts showed no quit, and settled in to work their offense in an attempt to keep the game close.

The second quarter was more of a back and forth between the two teams, with the Colts scoring 12 points and the Dark Horse scoring 15 bringing the score to 18-46 at the half. The Dark Horses were still in the lead with a 28 point advantage at halftime.

Leading into the third quarter the girls battled hard, but were still behind the Dark Horses 30-63. In the fourth and final quarter Cape Fear only managed to gain 2 points, while Clinton gained 18. This brought the total score to 32-75.

“I definitely think that was not the potential of the team we have. We were not all playing to the best of our ability and I think we all have stuff to work on like the little things, passing accuracy and ball control. I believe this team has a lot of potential, we just need to execute it,” said Junior Shooting Guard/Point Guard Emily Harris.

It was a tough night for the Colts, but they bounced back quickly and were ready for their next game against the Trojans from Pine Forest High School.

On Thursday, December 4th, Cape Fear took on the Pine Forest at home. The girls were more focused and ready to play in this one. The Colts put up a solid defensive performance to open the game, limiting the Trojan offense and stifling the scoring.

At the end of the first quarter the Trojans were up 13-6. During the second and third quarter the Colts put a majority of their points on the scoreboard bringing the total score to 30-35. At this point in the game the ladies hadn’t given up and were determined to end the game strong.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter the Colts were trailing closely behind the Trojans with a 5 point difference. Despite the ladies putting up a strong fight, the Trojans gained a 17 point advantage, ultimately bringing the score to 34-51.

“I think we had great communication but we lacked effort at times throughout the game. We definitely have to play more as a team but that will come with time, as long as we keep our heads up and work to get better we can definitely come out with a win if we ever had to play them again,” said Junior Shooting Guard Karamia Shields.

“The game was good, we are slowly getting better but we just need to keep building day by day,” said Freshman Center/Power Forward Sarah Eavenson.

These two losses for the Colts have brought their record for the season to 1-3 and their conference record to 0-0.

On Saturday, the Lady Colts traveled to Fayetteville Christian Academy, where they took on the Warriors. The Warriors had an overall record of 1-3 and 0-1 in conference play.  This game was back and forth the entire time for the Colts and Warriors. Despite being a close matchup, the Colts took the win, 35-33.

While this past week didn’t go entirely as the Colts had hoped, they are focused and ready to put their best foot forward. Each game is used as a learning opportunity as to what they can do better at the next. These ladies have put in the work at practice and are ready to continue showing it on the court.

This week the Lady Colts will play Douglas Byrd at home at 6pm and will be on the road on Thursday to play E.E. Smith. Come out and support these girls as they continue to work hard and make Colt Country proud.
