After a long season of 6:00 a.m. practices, extensive Saturday competitions, and cheering on the football and basketball teams, the Cape Fear cheer team’s hard work officially paid off. On Friday, January 9, in Concord, Cape Fear became the 2026 NCHSAA Coed Non-Tumbling State Champions.
Throughout the season, the Colts left everything on the mat at every competition. From winning their first title at the UCA Triangle competition to earning their second victory at the Tri-County Conference, their work ethic spoke for itself. Difficult stunts, flawless execution, and infectious enthusiasm propelled the cheerleaders to an undefeated season and a championship finish.
The team’s unity and cohesiveness were unmatched on the floor. They supported one another by hitting every stunt with power and executing sharp, precise jumps. Whether through encouraging words or shared glances of understanding, they competed as one, together as a family.

“I think we had a very good season. Everyone was hardworking and dedicated to the team. I feel like we had more of a family type of team and I’m excited that we were able to win for my last year,” said Senior Captain Isaiah Jackson.
Like any strong family, the team also celebrated individual accomplishments. Five athletes earned spots on the All-Conference Teams this season. Kayla Carter, Rachel Leonard, and Alyssa Orsonio were named to the 1st Team All-Conference, while Bailey Lilge and Fabricio Rivera earned 2nd Team All-Conference. Additionally, Fabricio Rivera was named Conference Cheerleader of the Year. These athletes’ skills and dedication to the team did not go unnoticed.
“I am beyond proud of the accomplishments our team has made this year. Each of these athletes have worked so hard and poured so much into our routine,” said Coach Kelly Osornio. “Watching them hit zero and take home the win at the NCHSAA cheerleading competition, was the most rewarding moment I have had as a coach. I am proud to say that the CF Varsity Competition team ended their season undefeated! The work was definitely worth it!”
Although the competition season has come to an end, the cheer team’s hard work is far from over. They will continue to support the Cape Fear Colts basketball teams and persevere through the remainder of the season. Whether on the basketball court, football field, or competition mat, the cheer team continues to show up and show out. Come out and support our reigning NCHSAA champions at the away basketball game on Friday, January 16 against Purnell Swett.
