Head Coach
Coach Keller begins her first season as head coach of the track and field teams. She will bring a fresh perspective to a program after a difficult offseason with issues, focusing on building a strong team culture that’s focused on having athletes reach their full potential.
Last Year’s Performance
Last year the boys team was able to win multiple meets, including 6 regular season conference meets, the Bear Invite at Grays Creek, and the United 8 Conference Championship meet. The runners showed steady improvement throughout the season, like Jacen Lunnermon, who dropped 13 seconds in the 800m, and Brandon Patton who dropped his 300m hurdle time by 4 seconds.
Conference Finish/Postseason
At the conference championship, the boys team finished in 1st place. The boys had 10 athletes and all 4 relays qualified for the regional meet, with the 4x400m, Marquan Footman for the shot put, and Tai Phillips for the 200m dash.
Key Returners
The team returns 5 athletes with state-level experience. Christopher and Collin Shick both qualified for the state championship meet this last season for the cross country team. And in track, Jacen Lunnermon, Brandon Patton, and Tyson Sinclair all return. Tyson qualified with the 2024 4×400 team but was unable to finish the season last year with a stress fracture. Brandon Patton qualified for the 300m hurdles last year, and this year he qualified for the 55m hurdles in indoor track. Jacen Lunnermon went with the 2025 4×400.
Promising Newcomers
The boys have some promising newcomers; they are adding senior Gabriel Page and freshman Seth Lowery. Gabriel transferred to Cape Fear last year but was unable to compete due to injury. While in California, Gabriel qualified for regionals in the 400m dash. Seth is a freshman who ran indoor this last season and outdoor in middle school. Seth ran an impressive 3:04 1000m in the indoor season, the 2nd fastest on the team.
Coach Quote
When asked how she thinks the team will do this season, Coach Keller had this to say: “I’m confident that our boys and girls team will be able to compete and win a state championship.”
Key Runner Quote
Collin Shick, who is expected to be a major contributor to the boys distance team this season, had this to say about the upcoming season: “The team is headed in a positive direction, but we still have a lot to work on if we want to achieve our goals.” He also said, “I think I’ll make the biggest contribution for the distance team, and Brandon Patton will be the biggest impact for sprints and hurdles.”
Collin also shared his personal goals, saying, “My personal goals are to place top 3 in the region for one of my events and to make the state championship meet, as well as nationals.”
