Cape Fear Varsity baseball will be back in action soon here in Colt country! Last year the Colts finished the season with an overall record of 17-11 and a conference record of 11-5.

The Colts finished 3rd in the conference behind Lumberton and Grays Creek and sadly took a loss in the second round of the state playoffs to West Brunswick.

This year they are led once again by Head Coach Jarrod Britt.

The Colts will face the likes of Lumberton, Purnell Swett, Grays Creek, Terry Sanford, and Scotland for their conference matchups.

A key returner this year for the Colts is Senior Nick Serbio. Serbio finished last year with a .333 batting average and an ERA of 4.80.

“I expect for us to have a really good season and make a deep run in the playoffs, I can contribute by picking up my teammates, by coming in a few innings to pitch, and by getting us out of some tough situations,” said Serbio.

Another key returner this year is Junior Teagun Strahley. Strahley finished last year with a 0.219 batting average and a 0.975 fielding percentage.

A promising newcomer this year for the Colts is sophomore pitcher Eason Turner. Turner finished last season with 4 wins and 1 loss and an ERA of 2.95.

“As a sophomore, what I’m thinking is that he’s going to probably be more of a relief pitcher. Maybe, if we have 3 games a week, he might get a start, but my expectation is that he’s just going to keep developing the secondary pitches and learning how to face varsity hitters because it’s just not easy,” said Coach Britt when asked about promising newcomer Eason Turner.

“We have a really good core of juniors and sophomores coming in through our program right now. I have high expectations because those guys are very talented, but they’re also a very good group like chemistry wise. They respond well to each other; they hold each other accountable. We usually have good hard practices. So my expectations are very, very high,” said Coach Britt when asked about his expectations for the season.

The Colts first home game against Triton on Friday February 27th will have to be rescheduled due to rain.

Make sure to come out and support your Colts baseball team throughout what is bound to be a very successful season.
