Throughout the years, Cape Fear has seen a number of great athletes come through. One of these athletes is Toni Blackwell. During her last four years, Toni has emerged as the star of the golf team. She’s been a low shooter and key player on the green and has helped lead her team to victory each match.

This year Toni is the leader of the team. She has scored the lowest in all five matches the Colts have played this season. She has remained consistent in every match, always shooting between 75 and 79.

Blackwell has earned ‘Player of the Year’ honors for the last three years and is well on her way to winning once again as a senior, as she is currently the number one player in the conference.

“I just try to work hard and stay focused. As long as I keep my game consistent, this will be my fourth year accomplishing ‘Player of the Year’ if I get it.” says Blackwell.

Blackwell works hard on her game outside of Cape Fear and it shows. On September 16th, Toni won the Cumberland County Golf Championship. She also placed 6th out of 99 girls at the North State High School Challenge at Keith Hills with a score of 74.

Blackwell has some uplifting things to say about the golf team this year.

“We have a lot of new players that are improving each match. We are working hard to win each match. I hope next year’s team can continue our winning tradition. Coach Edge does a good job getting girls prepared,” said Blackwell.

Toni ACTUALLY teeing off. 😉

Toni is excited about the rest of her season at Cape Fear, and has high hopes for the team and their accomplishments.

Blackwell said, “My expectation for the team is that we win our conference. I want us to win our 3rd regional championship. I hope we can at least go compete as a team at states.”

Blackwell has verbally committed to play at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

“It’s exciting because it has been one of my goals and making the commitment to UNCP took a lot of stress off of me,” says Blackwell. “It’s both sad and exciting to be leaving Cape Fear. Sad because I will miss playing high school golf and playing for Coach Edge and Cape Fear. Excited because I will have new challenges, I will get to travel to other states to play, and I really like the girls on the team and Coach Synan,” said Blackwell.

Over the past four years, Toni has continuously shown our community what a great golfer she is, and in the next four the entire state of North Carolina will get to see her talent. Go watch Toni and the rest of the team play in their next match held at Cypress Lakes on Monday, September 30th at 1:00 pm.
