This past Saturday, the Cape Fear Cross Country team ran their first race of the season at Grays Creek High School. The Colts performed extremely well and proved, once again, that they are at the top of their conference.
The men’s team won first place, beating Grays Creek by 3 points. Maddox Terwilliger, a starting freshman, placed fourth overall with Max Risenmay finishing right behind him in fifth. Both boys earned medals at this meet.
Coach Matt Hanes was pleased with the effort on the course, but felt that the team has quite a bit to work on in their pursuit of another conference championship. “I think all together, we did a fantastic job, going out there and performing.” Hanes said after the race.
Iris Terwilliger, a returning senior, finished in first place for the girls. She was also pleased with her race, but also had an excited eye on the future. “Although I may have run as well as I wanted to this past meet, I am excited to see where my training will take me in my upcoming meets and to see how our team does better as a whole,” said Terwilliger.
Caleb Knudsen, returning senior and veteran of the program, praised his young teammates and gave some input into the mind of the runners. “Every race is different presenting different challenges,” said Knudsen. “One thing stays the same and that’s the fact that you have to have a focused mindset every second of each race. We’ve got a great group of runners no doubt and I’m excited to see the outcome at the end of this year.”
Coach Hanes also added, “Our lead runner for the girls finished first and we even had a couple people on the guys team place. There is still a bit we need to work on to get those times down, but other than that I have a great feeling about this season.”
We’re so excited to see what this season has in store for our Colts. Come see them at their next meet on September 8th at Cape Fear Highschool!
