Cape Fear played their first home football game on Friday, August 27. The Colts hosted the EE Smith Golden Bulls and swaggered out with a 28-0 win.
“Winning our first home game is always an important goal for us,” said head coach Jake Thomas. The game had other significance as well. It was played in honor of late principal Brian Edkins, who tragically passed away this summer. The Colts record now stands at 2-0, which seems to be the start of a winning streak after beating Durham Riverside last week.
The Colts defense was on fire Friday, pitching a shutout. Ricardo Mcdonald (sophomore) and Avery Moore (junior) each managed an interception. Keyshon Washington, a returning senior, came up with a big sack which resulted in a fumble. The Colts defense was extremely stingy on the night, allowing less than 100 total yards from the EE Smith offense.
This was the third shutout for the Colt defense in the last 7 contests, dating back to last spring. The performance Friday suggests that the Colts will continue their tradition of tough, physical defense.
Cole Wilson, junior quarterback, passed for 213 yards and threw two touchdowns. Junior receiver Jacary Lightsey led the team in catches with 10 receptions and 82 yards! RJ Mcdonald, star basketball convert, had 109 yards receiving, raking in two touchdowns along the way.
McDonald was awarded player of the game for his outstanding performance. He plays alongside his little brother Ricardo McDonald, who is a star defensive back for the Colts.
“Growing up playing rec football and in the yard with my brother was fun. Now finally getting to come and play together at the next level has been a great experience and bonding moment for us,” admitted the older brother.
This Friday, September 3rd, the Colts play their rivals at Terry Sanford. In order to win, RJ Mcdonald said, “We need to execute as a team, be smart offensively, and take care of the ball.”
Make sure to clear your schedule and come out to cheer on the Colts this Friday night as they face their biggest opponent. We can’t wait to see you there!
