On Thursday September 23, the varsity soccer team picked up an outstanding victory against the Terry Sanford Bulldogs. This storied rivalry lived up to the hype once again, as the Colts left Bulldog territory with a 3-2 win.
Star midfielder Trent Bunce was the star of the night, coming away with two goals by the end of the game. One of those was a header that got Colt fans on their feet. “It’s cool,” Bunce stated, “but I can’t take all the credit because I wouldn’t be where I am without my team giving me every opportunity available.”
Despite efforts to rattle Maddox Terwilliger, the young star came up huge in his first taste of the Battle of the Blues. He ended the night with an impressive assist that gave the Colts the lead. “Right when we took the lead, the momentum went up. I finally felt that we could pull together and take a dub.”
Neither team seemed to have control for most of the match, as the ball kept going back and forth, hovering around midfield. The tension was high and the crowd was on the edge of their seats, waiting for someone to take advantage. The score remained knotted at 1-1 at the half.
Early in the second half, the Colts finally took the lead with Bunce’s second score with an assist from Terwilliger. His timely pass out in front of the lightning-quick Bunce rolled through the Bulldog defenders. Bunce shot through the defense and buried the ball in the net, giving the Colts the lead 2-1.
“It felt good. I was ready for the game, and was excited because of the rivalry we share with them.” said Bunce afterward.
The Bulldogs stepped up their game and once again tied the score with a goal in the 70th minute. With 10 minutes remaining in the match, things were tied 2-2
Julius McLemore came up big in the last 10 minutes with a goal that ended all hope for a Bulldog comeback. His shot off a rebound landed perfectly in the goal, giving the Colts a late lead at 3-2.
The Colts were able to stave off a Bulldog comeback with tough defense and solid passing in the last few minutes, cementing what could possibly be one of their biggest wins of the season. Trent reflected on the game, “I was beyond pleased with the result. To get two goals in a game that everyone knew the importance of was a great feeling.” He also said, “It’s nice to know we are more cohesive, and are able to work as a team better than ever at this point.”
It was an intense week for the Colts leading up to the game. With a lot of dedication and hard work, the Colts successfully put the Bulldogs back in their kennel. Make sure to watch out for the next game against Grays Creek!
