The Cape Fear Men’s Basketball team has been on a roll recently as they secured a huge 64-60 home victory against 71st High this past Friday.
The game was a tough battle all the way to the end. At one point Cape Fear was down double digits, but they found their momentum and cut the lead and gave themselves a chance in the fourth quarter.
As the game progressed, the Colts showed what they can do when they play together. This win gives the Colts their fourth straight victory. Momentum has been building for the Colts, and they have moved into sole possession of third place in the United 8 Conference standings.
“The guys have just focused and put a greater emphasis on doing the small things and competing,” said Head Coach Alphonza Kee of his team’s hot streak. “We have always had offensive ability; we have not always had the same enthusiasm defensively.”
The Colt defense has been nothing short of suffocating as of late. The team has played with an intensity and motivation that is impressive to witness.
“We are starting to feel how we should have at the beginning of the season,” said sophomore Forward Mekhai Coleman. “We are starting to take each other [teammates] seriously and we aren’t playing around at practice. We are listening to Coach and becoming more of a team. We have found a couple leaders and some energy. We are on the road to doing something come playoff time.”
Coleman chipped in 16 points Friday, but his true contribution to the team was his defense. The young star covered the Falcons like a blanket, allowing almost no room for ball movement. Coleman’s effort and intensity have been a big reason for Cape Fear’s recent success.
“It felt great to beat them; it proves that we are still a team to look out for even though we had a rough start,” said Coleman.
The Colts will try to keep the momentum going as they travel to Douglas Byrd tonight. Come out and support your Colts as they do their best to stampede through the Eagles!
