The Lady Colts are making history this season. They are poised to make the state playoffs for the first time since 1989 (for you math majors, that’s 33 years and 32 seasons). Not only that, but the chances are looking better and better that your Lady Colts are going to HOST a playoff game. A home playoff game with this team and Cape Fear’s fan base? Smells like a recipe for success, right there!
The Colts bashed the Bucs on Thursday night, resulting in an astonishing 67-36 win. Kaiya Starling led all scorers with 21 points. Starling was 3 out of 4 from the 3-point line as well. Samara Britt chipped in 15 of her own to the Cape Fear tally, and next to her was Teralyn Harris with a solid 14 points.
Hanna Walker and Anijah Jones were also eager to get in on the action, scoring 8 and 7, respectively, for the Colts.
The game was close early on, as both teams were knotted at 10 after the first. The Colts came out hot in the second quarter, outscoring the Bucs 23-8 in the frame. This put the Colts up 33-18 at the half.
After the half, the third quarter stayed tight, but Cape Fear was able to add to their lead. The Colts were up 45-27 heading into the fourth. The girls did not slow down in the fourth, as they dominated the quarter 23-9, completing the lopsided victory 67-36.
“It feels great to be a part of a team that is making history. I hope that everyone will support us more now that we have made a statement and a name for ourselves.” says Sophomore point guard Teralyn Harris.
The Lady Colts have obviously kept up their strong and stingy defense. A large part of the team’s success is due to the stifling style of defense the Colts play. The focus is on pressure and hustle, causing opponents to make mistakes that the Colts can capitalize on. They held Jack Britt to only 18 points in each half Thursday night.
“In order to win or get further in the playoffs, we have to work together and play as a team and not individuals. Mentally we need to be in it and match the aggressiveness that will be displayed in the upcoming games. Ultimately, we are super stoked for the road ahead.” says Harris.
