The Cape Fear Men’s Basketball played their first game of the state playoffs Tuesday night. The Colts squared off against C.B. Aycock, and the game did not disappoint. The contest went down to the wire, and the Colts came out victorious as they came up with a clutch win in Double Overtime.
The Colts came into this game as the underdog holding the 21st seed, playing against 12 seed C.B Aycock. This did not intimidate the Colts. They came out strong and battled the entire game.
The Colts were down in the final minutes of the game. Despite the Falcons crowd rallying against them, Cape Fear made some crucial points to push the game to overtime.
In overtime, the game continued back and forth, with each team putting the ball in the basket. The Falcons made some clutch baskets in the last minute of extra time to extend their lead by two. The Colts answered immediately as Senior Guard RJ Mcdonald was fouled on a drive to the basket. McDonald took to the line. With all the pressure of the game on him, the veteran Colt calmly sank both free throws to send the Game into DOUBLE OVERTIME!
McDonald finished with 12 points on the night. He was another big factor in the Colts’ success.
In the second period of bonus basketball, Cape Fear came out strong as Justin Burden scored a quick basket to start. After a defensive stop, leading scorer Masaun Bryant returned down the court to make a huge three pointer. This iced things for the Colts. The lead was too big and time was too short for the Falcons and they couldn’t battle back. The Colts won a huge road victory and finished 73-68.
Jeremiah Melvin finished the game with an outstanding 13 rebounds. This was a big contribution to the win as he covered the glass like Windex for the entire game, helping get many second chance points for Cape Fear.
“We haven’t been focusing too much on the travel and being the underdog.” said Melvin “We’re just going out and playing how we know we can play. Now when it’s the playoffs, we’re not really too focused on our opponent. We’re just trying to focus on us, mainly, because we control our own destiny, so if we focus too much on our opponent, then we will forget about the little things that we need to do to be successful.”
In addition to his stellar rebounding, Melvin finished with 17 points for the game. The only other Colt in double figures for points was Justin Burden with 10 points on the evening.
Masaun Bryant was named player of the game after scoring 27 points including burying four shots from beyond the arc. Bryant also had 6 assists, contributing significantly off the ball and allowing his teammates to get good looks at the basket.
The Colts will be Taking on the 5th seed 71st Falcons Thursday. The Falcons were the United 8 Conference Champions, but the Colts split with the Falcons in the regular season. Cape Fear will need your support as they take on 71st, so come out and support!
