Tuesday evening the Colts traveled south to Robeson County to take on the Lumberton Pirates for their first United 8 Conference match of the season. They won in straight sets, making quick work of the Pirates. The win left the Colts 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The game kicked off at 6 pm with a quick first set, as the Colts jumped on the board early, winning 25-14. Junior Olivia Melvin dominated the first set with 7 of her 12 kills.
“I felt really good about my swings all game,” said Melvin after the match.
The second set was a tight one, with a final score of 32-30, but the Colts found a way to finish on top. Junior Addie Hudson came up big, leading the Colts with 20 serve receptions.
Junior Brooke Bombaptepe was equally impressive on the night, joining Melvin with 11 kills. Freshman newcomer Tabitha Newlin got in on the action with 6, and Junior Payton Gunter rounded out the stat sheet with 5 kills of her own.

The Colts serving game was extremely accurate, setting the tone with 37 aces.
“I can’t wait to see what we do later on in the season” said Melvin “I know we will do great in our conference and give it our best every game.”
As impressive as the Colts were in service, defense was the star of the show on Tuesday. Blocks from Melvin, Johnson, Baxley, and Newlin kept the Pirates on their heels. Digs by Melvin, Baxley, Gunter, Hudson, and Bombatepe helped the Colts keep the ball off the ground. Solid defensive play will be a point of emphasis for the team as they continue conference play.
Overall, the Colts played a solid match. They are excited for the season and eager to compete for a shot at a conference championship and a possible playoff run.
