On Tuesday, August 31, the Cape Fear girl’s golf team traveled to Pinecrest Golf & Country Club for their first match of the season. Senior Hannah Walker shined with the lowest score of her high school career with a 41.

This was a great way for the team to start off the year and continue their dominance in the United 8 Conference. Hannah has put in countless hours of work on her game over the summer The work definitely paid off, as her lowest score last season was 48.

“I think it all just clicked for me,” said Walker. “I just hope I can keep playing the way that I am right now for the rest of the season and help the team make states.”

Hannah has been a multisport athlete since 6th grade. She had played basketball and soccer, but picked up golf less than 2 years ago and has shown tremendous progress. For Walker it came naturally. She is mostly self taught, although with the help of her coach Todd Edge, her game has gone to the next level. With play on Walker’s level, Coach Edge has experienced great success in recent years, appearing in state championships 4 out of the last 5 years.

She has played shooting guard on the basketball team since her freshman year. Last season Walker contributed greatly to the team averaging 5 points per game. She was also a great on ball defender. She is going to continue playing for her senior season and hopes to make the playoffs for the second year in a row.

Hannah has also been a member of the Varsity Soccer Team for three years. She plays forward and scored 4 goals and 5 assists in her last season. The girls soccer team finished with an overall record last year of 15-4 and 12-0 in the United 8 Conference. Her contributions helped secure the team’s spot in the State Playoffs. She is hopeful that the Colts can continue this record for the upcoming year.

Coach Todd Edge started this program in 2012 and it has skyrocketed since then. “I think for Hannah it is all mental now,” says Edge. “If she believes that she can go out there and do what she did on Tuesday, the skys the limit.”

The girls have their second conference match on Tuesday, September 6th hoping to keep their undefeated streak alive. We cannot wait to see how Hannah continues to improve throughout this season. Congratulations to CFNN Athlete of the Week Hannah Walker! Stay tuned for updates!
