Tonight, the Colts travel to Lumbeton to take on the Pirates for their first conference game of the season. The Colts’ record sits at 2-1, with victories over the Riverside Pirates and the Terry Sanford Bulldogs. The Colts come in averaging 24 points per game.
Cape Fear is coming off of an open week, where they had a chance to fine tune some things on offense, defense, special teams, and to heal some bumps and bruises.
Quarterback Cole WIlson leads the Colts with 5 touchdown passes, two of those to senior receiver Devonte’ Hill. Junior sensation Jeremiah Melvin is averaging 62.7 yards per game through the air, while junior running back and CFNN Athlete of the Week Favour Murtala is pitching in 90.3 yards rushing per contest.
Defensively, the Colts are led by senior safety Avery Moore, who has 2 interceptions on the year. Linebacker Robert Moore and defensive end Cameron Graham chip in 4 sacks apiece on the season.
Lumberton has had a rough start to their season, posting a record of 0-3, losing to the Fairmont Golden Tornados, Hoke County Bucks, and the EA Laney Buccaneers. The Pirate offense averages around 5 points per game.
The Colts have used different themes for each day of practice during the week leading up to the game. Monday means “commitment,” Tuesday is “competition,” Wednesday is “winning,” and they end the week of practice with “no repeat” Thursday.
“Offensively we need to be balanced and be able to run the ball and throw the ball efficiently,” explains Head Coach, Jake Thomas.
“Defensively we need to know all our assignments, keep up our effort, and don’t get in our heads,“ States Defense Player Mekhi Coleman.
“Everybody has to do their job, if everybody does their job, we win,”’ Coach Thomas explained. As simple as it sounds, the Colts really need to push to prove they deserve a shot at the United 8 Conference title.
