Thursday evening your Lady Colts took on the Lumberton Pirates at home, for their 8th United 8 Conference match of the season. Cape Fear made quick work of the Pirates, winning in straight sets. This win brought the ladies to a 10-3 overall record and a record 7-1 in the United 8 Conference, keeping the Colts locked in a 3-way tie for first place with Southview and Grays Creek.
The game kicked off at 6 pm with a quick first set. The Colts jumped on the board early, winning 25-15. Juniors Olivia Melvin and Brooke Bombatepe had a combined 24 kills to help guide the Colts to the win.
“Everything was flowing well and it was easy to produce points,” said Bombatepe.
Helping keep the ball in the air, Juniors Addie Hudson, Larkin Baxley, and Olivia Melvin had a combined 64 digs. The 3 also had a combined 74 serve receptions.
The Colts dominated the second set with a score of 25-10. Aces from Payton Gunter, Brooke Bombatepe, and Lilly Rayburn helped rack up points for the Colts.
Juniors Lilly Rayburn, Illyanna Johnson, and Tabitha Newlin helped out the Colts defense with a total of 12 blocks. Tough Colt defense was a big factor in the lopsided set.
Set three saw more of the same, with the usual Colt suspects reaching above the net for more spectacular kills, blocks and digs from Melvin, Bombatepe, Gunter, and Rayburn.
Overall this was a solid game for the Lady Colts. The girls are eager to continue their conference play and shoot for a chance at the U8 title and earn a high seed in the playoffs.
