On Wednesday the Lady Colts faced off against the Jack Britt Buccaneers in a tough United 8 Conference match. The Colts had to stay on their game throughout the contest and remember the techniques they had been practicing during the week. The Colts secured a convincing 9-0 victory.
“Practice recently has been focused on specific strategies, constant reps to sharpen those skills and transitioning to point playing so they can execute during a big match,” said Head Coach Chris Lucas. “As the great Billie Jean King once said, ‘pressure is a privilege’; I want our girls to welcome that pressure.”
As the Colts round up their season, Brooke Bieniek is finishing up her senior season. Bieniek played her very last match against the Pirates. It was a very emotional day for her.
“It’s bittersweet because I am going to miss playing Jack Britt and playing tennis in general in high school. But I am excited for college and what is ahead.” said Bieniek.
Brooke finished with a perfect score of 6-0,6-0. She was executing her skills and placing her shots throughout the court. Bieniek is an amazing player and will finish her senior year playing on court two.
Not only did Bieniek close out singles, but she and partner Anna Piland closed out doubles as well with a score of 8-0. Piland and Bieniek are Defending State Champion doubles partners, so this moment was very special for Brooke as she finishes up her senior season.
The Colts are currently ranked #1 in the state in 3A Tennis, and according to Head Coach Chris Lucas, the ladies have not dropped a single match in conference play.
The win all but locked up another conference title for the Colts, who are in peak form headed into the postseason.
“We have been practicing with the playoffs in mind ever since the first day of workouts, that’s why we started the season against New Hanover, a 4A powerhouse,” said Coach Lucas after the match. “I wanted the girls to be tested early so they don’t back down from challenges, no matter who is across the net.”
The Colts are now getting close to play off time, so the pressure is on as they vie for a second State Championship.
The Lady Colts now boast an overall record of 11-1.
