Wednesday evening your Lady Colts took on the Gray’s Creek Bears in the United 8 Conference tournament championship game. The Colts dominated, winning in straight sets to secure the championship. This was a huge victory for the Colts, as they are now U8 Conference tournament champions in addition to regular season champions. The win bumped the Colts to 13-1 in U8 conference play and 19-3 overall.
The game began with the Colts winning the first set 25-14. The Colts’ serving helped set the tone with 6 aces.
The second set ended smoothly with a final score of 25-22. Kills from Juniors Brooke Bombatepe, Laney Talley, Olivia Melvin, and freshman Tabitha Nelwin helped lead the Colts to victory.
“I think we really worked as a team and accomplished our goals that we worked for all summer and season long.” said Brooke Bombatepe.
The third and final set ended with a score of 25-15, securing the huge win for the Colts. Juniors Lilly Rayburn and Illyanna Johnson helped the Colts with their blocking and hitting from the middle, bringing in 8 points.
Juniors Addie Hudson and Larkin Baxley had a combined total of 28 digs and 22 serve receptions.
Junior setters Payton Gunter and Brooke Bombatepe had 23 assists total, helping the Colts take the win..
Cape Fear enters the playoffs as a 4 seed in the east region. This means they have the chance to host at least three games if they continue to advance. They will begin the playoffs by taking on the Saints of Southern Wayne High School. Southern Wayne finished 6th in the Quad County 3A Conference with a 4-10 record. They are 8-11 overall. The Colts share no common opponents with the Saints.
