The Cape Fear Colts traveled to take on the Lumberton Pirates last Friday Night. Unfortunately, after a hard fought game the Colts came up short with a score of 51-57.

The Colts started off slow due to some tough defense from Lumberton. Cape Fear had trouble scoring down low and missed a few key shots. They ended the half in a 16-26 hole and were forced to claw their way back in. They were able to come back and tighten things up in the second half with some clutch scoring from Junior Forward Jeremiah Melvin.

Cape Fear was able to pull within five of the Pirates but a late basket from Lumberton doomed the Colts. The final score was 51-57. The loss kept the Colts in a third place tie with Purnell Swett  in the U8 Conference. They now sit at 6-3 in the conference and 10-6 overall.

Last Night, the Colts hit the road again to take on Purnell Swett in a battle for third place in the conference and a definite playoff berth. This was an extremely important game for Cape Fear. The Colts were up most of the game but came up short in the last few minutes, falling to the Rams  59-64.

At the end of the first quarter the Colts were up 16-11 and playing strong. They maintained their lead to close out the half 34-27. Things seemed to be clicking for the Colts, and it looked like they would be able to escape Pembroke with a win.

Cape Fear continued to lead through the end of the third quarter behind some strong defense. They led 48-40 going into the final frame.

Foul trouble midway through the fourth quarter put the Colts’ lead in jeopardy and allowed the Rams to come back and tie the game. After a technical foul on the Colts, the Rams were able to gain momentum and start their run. Several turnovers by the Colts gave the Rams the lead late in the fourth. The Colts were forced to foul to stop the clock, but unfortunately there wasn’t enough time for them to come back. The Rams ended up winning by 5.

“We missed defensive assignments and had too many turnovers but we can take this loss as a lesson to play more together and execute,” said Sophomore Arrington Kee.

Despite a hard fight from the Colts, they now sit in fourth place within the United 8 Conference.

The Cape Fear Colts are hitting the road to take on the Seventy First Falcons this Friday Night. This will be a hard fight for the Colts that you don’t want to miss.
