On Saturday January 21st, the Cape Fear Boys and Girls Indoor Track Teams traveled to Union Pines High School to compete in their fourth track meet of the season. This was a vital meet for the Colts where many individual and relay events qualified for the State Championship.

With the State Championship less than a month away, the team has been putting in hard work to qualify. Typically during a normal outdoor track season athletes have the opportunity to compete at a Conference meet, Regionals, and then the State Championship but Indoor Season is structured completely differently. During Indoor Season you must qualify for State at a regular season meet which puts enormous pressure on the athletes.

An interesting fact about the State Championship is the track is only 200 meters long at an indoor facility whereas an outdoor track is 400 meters long. This is why there are different running events for the Indoor Season.

The events available to compete for during Indoor Season are:

Field Events Include: High Jump, Triple Jump, Long Jump, Pole Vault, and Shot Put.

Running Individual Events Include: 55m Dash, 55m Hurdles, 300m Dash, 500m Dash, 1000m Run, 1600m Run, and 3200m Run.

Relays Include: 4x200m Relay, 4x400m Relay, and 4x800m Relay.

Cape Fear boys had many Top 3 finishes at the meet on Saturday. In the 55m dash, Yazeare Pearsall-Garcia finished first with 6.59 seconds and Raysean Hunter was close behind in second place with 6.74 seconds. In the 300m dash, Yazeare Pearsall-Garcia finished first with 36.33 seconds and Raysean Hunter finished in second place with 38.40 seconds. Khalil Marshall took first place in the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:12.95 and Terry Sibana took third place with a time of 1:16.23. Elijah McLeod tied for 2nd place in high jump with a height of 5-02. The boys 4×400 meter relay also took first place. The boys team as a whole took 2nd place at the meet.

Cape Fear girls had a few top 3 finishes. Sabrena Hogan placed 2nd in the 300 meter dash with a time of 47.11 seconds. The girls 4×400 meter relay took third place with a time of 5.01.34. Sabrena Hogan also took first place in triple jump with a jump of 32-06.5. The girls team as a whole took 5th place at the meet.

The boys team has had many athletes qualify for State already this season. Yazeare Pearsall-Garcia qualified for the 300 meter dash with a time of 36.33 seconds, this is the only individual running event that has qualified so far this season. The boys 4×400 team also qualified with a time of 3:39:91. This team includes Yazeare Pearsall- Garcia, Taylor Woodard, Terry Sibanda, and Khalil Marshall. Tristan Sexton qualified for long jump with a jump of 19’3.5:”.

The girls team has had two athletes qualify this season so far. Sabrena Hogan has qualified in triple jump with a jump of 32 ‘6.5″. Kerrigan Brown qualified in High Jump with a jump of 5-02.

Within the next week, Cape Fear is expected to have a few more athletes qualify in a variety of events for the State Championship. They will have one final chance to qualify at the JDL Meet on Monday, January 30th.

Cape Fear has not had an indoor track season in several years, and they are excited to have it back. Follow along to see updates on the athletes and how they do in the next few weeks. The State Championship will be held on Friday February 10th at JDL, and the Colts are expected to be extremely competitive.
