CFNN Reporters Ainsley Spell and Mary Catherine Shook

This past Saturday, the Colts dominated the competition in the pool. Both the boys and girls team won first place in the United 8 Conference swim meet, and the High Point Award was brought home by both Senior Nick Shook and Sophomore Mary Catherine Shook.

“Mary Catherine has a lot of natural ability, and if she works hard enough she will be able to compete in any race she wants,” said Coach Amey Shook.

At the start of the swim meet Head Coach Amey Shook was announced as the “Coach of The Year!” Shook has done an amazing job turning swim into a winning program ever since she took over the team 6 years ago.

“I’m grateful for a great coach that has pushed me and with that I have won,” says Sophomore Alex Bridges after winning first place in 100 yard Breaststroke.

The Girls 200 Yard-Medley Relay team started the meet off strong for the Colts. Starring Casey Fitch, Lily Brinker, Mary Catherine Shook, and Tanya Wilmore, the Colts won first place. Also placing first was the Boys 200 Yard-Medley with Nick Shook, Alex Bridges, Hunter Anderson, and Preston Parker.

Freshman Laney Williams and Freshman Anamarie Brenes have come a long way this season.  In the 200 Yard Freestyle, Laney placed first with Anamarie right behind her coming in second. Nick Serbio washed the competition away taking first place in the 500 Yard Freestyle. These freshmen make the future of Cape Fear swim look extremely promising.

Senior Captain Lily Brinker took first in not only the 50 Yard Freestyle but in the 100 Yard Breaststroke too.

Nick Shook took a massive win in the 100 Yard Butterfly and in the 100 Yard Backstroke. He was awarded the highest amount of points possible for the boys division.

Mary Catherine Shook won the highest amount of points possible for the girls division, as well as winning the 100 Yard Backstroke and the 100 Yard Freestyle.

Tanya Wilmore, Lily Brinker, Grace Sherbert, and Anamarie Brenes took first place in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.

While swimming toward a picture perfect finish, the Colts Girls 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team consisting of Grace Sherbert, Anamarie Brenes, Casey Fitch, and Mary Catherine Shook finished in first. Hunter Anderson, Nick Serbio, Alex Bridges, and Nick Shook also swam to a first place finish.

The team will be attending Regionals Friday at the Aquatic Center in Raleigh. Several Colt swimmers are hoping to qualify for states. Good luck team!
