It’s that time of year again…. LACROSSE SEASON, and the Cape Fear Boys lacrosse team is looking very good this year, but before we get into that let’s look back at last season.

Last season record

Led by Head coach Eric Finley, our boys team went 6-12 last season, making it to the 3rd round of playoffs. The team finished 3rd place in conference with a record of 4-4.

Returner Starters

The team lost some of their star seniors, but there are still several returning players to look out for. Collin Finley (Senior and School record holder in scoring with 123 goals) finished last season with 56 goals and 35 assists, ending the season as the team’s highest scoring player, and the 2nd highest player in conference. Jack Donatelle ended the season with 32 goals and 16 assists. Dontatelle finished 2nd on the team, as a freshman, an impressive performance by the 9th grade sensation.

On the opposite end of the field, goalie Dawson Petzel (Senior) ended the season with a 0.526 save percentage (That’s pretty good), saving 223 shots. Players  Gray Murphy and Jaden Reid help lock down the defense and keep the opposing team from scoring.

Petzel, Reid, and Finley are all committed to Pfeiffer University for Lacrosse, and will be attending the school in the fall.

Promising Newcomers

The team said goodbye to multiple seniors this season, but has welcomed multiple new players who show plenty of promise.  Dylan Ferguson (Sophomore) is one of these new additions, coming on as one of the team’s new faceoff players.  Connor Dickenson (Sophomore) is another first year player. Despite the youth, Dickenson is very aggressive defensively, and he is definitely a player to watch

Outlook for the Season

“I think we have the talent to have a very successful season, we just have to put it all together. Consistent fundamentals, smart plays, and establish some of the younger profiles that have come into the program, and get them ready for some of the big games where we are going to need that depth ” says Coach Eric Finley

Overall the Cape Fear lacrosse team looks to be set up for a good season, so let’s cheer them on and support them in this 2023 season!
