Cape Fear baseball took a trip down I-95 on Friday to take on the Wildcats of West Johnston. This was their third game of the week against yet another quality opponent. The Colts played solid defense, but couldn’t get the bats going at the right time, unfortunately taking a loss 1-0.

Colts starting pitcher Caden Jeffrey was fantastic, pitching a stellar 5 ⅔ innings with 9 strikeouts, only allowing 4 hits.  Jeffrey allowed one unearned run in his outing.

“I just pray to God,and trust my defense to have that confidence in me when I’m pitching,” said Jeffrey after the game.

Even though the Colts didn’t have any runs come in, 4 players went 1-3 on the night. Ben Martinez, Landon Underwood, Chris Serbio and Brody Jackson.

The defense committed two errors, but six players had a 1.000 fielding percentage for the night. Brycen Tallley, Chris Serbio and Brody Jackson turned a double play, helping the defense out.

“Last week we had three games, all were one run games. In those games we did not have big hits at the right time,” said Head Coach Jarrod Britt. “I think just refocusing this week, making sure we work hard in practice, and making sure we focus on the execution in the right places, and to continue to build on what we are doing right now. You know baseball is a tough sport.”

The loss brings the Colts record to 1-2 on the season. Hopefully these Boys will have a better performance this week as the conference play starts. They will be on the road Tuesday at Lumberton and will be home Thursday against Pine Forest. They will finish out the week playing Purnell Swett at home.
