Cumberland County Schools recently recognized Mr. Chris Lucas, the Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Consultant at Cape Fear and Westover High Schools, and awarded him the 2025 North Carolina Association for the Gifted and Talented (NCAGT) award.

This award recognizes teachers who create opportunities for gifted students to excel by designing challenging curricula, establishing strong support systems, and staying at the forefront of innovative teaching methods. To be considered for the award, an educator must be nominated by the NCAGT general membership for their contributions to gifted students across North Carolina. The final decision is made by the NCAGT Board of Directors.

Mr. Lucas received the award during the 50th annual NCAGT conference awards ceremony on March 14, 2025. He shared how much this recognition means to him.

“This award represents the amazing support I’ve had from both schools and the district’s gifted department. That support has helped increase access to advanced classes, improve academic development, and create personalized learning opportunities for students to explore their unique talents and interests,” said Mr. Lucas.

Thanks to Mr. Lucas’s efforts, Cape Fear and Westover High Schools have expanded programs for gifted students, adding more honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and enrichment classes. His dedication ensures that students who need more advanced learning opportunities get the support they need to grow and succeed.

“Mr. Lucas has always been there for me, guiding me, and assisting me with the most rigorous schedule possible every semester. I would not be where I am today without him,” said Senior Brandon Simpson. “It’s no surprise that he won the award. His work with students speaks for itself. He works extremely hard for the students at Cape Fear.”

Although winning the award may have come as a surprise to Lucas, it came as no surprise to his colleagues, his students, and his administration. Lucas is a dedicated educator who always looks to get the most out of his students.

This is not Lucas’ first major award, either. He was named Cape Fear High School’s Teacher of the Year in 2020, and would go on to win the Cape Fear District Teacher of the Year as well. Lucas is respected and admired by his colleagues.

“We are incredibly proud of Mr. Lucas for being named the AIG Coordinator of the Year for NC,” said Cape Fear Principal Dr. Jason Jordan. “This recognition reflects the dedication, expertise, and passion he brings to CFHS every day. Mr. Lucas has made a lasting impact on the lives of so many students, challenging them to reach their full potential. His commitment to excellence sets a high standard for all educators, and we are fortunate to have him as part of the Cape Fear family.”

Cumberland County Schools along with Cape Fear High School is proud to celebrate Mr. Lucas and his commitment to making a difference in the lives of gifted students.
