The Cape Fear High School ladies tennis team is entering the 2026 season undefeated after winning their latest match against Purnell Swett, 8–1. The girls have been practicing hard, but a group that has definitely stood out on the court is the team’s new freshmen: Kennedy Hancock, Isabel Spruill, Faith Harden, and Emma Luchetta.
The team faced Purnell Swett on Sept. 2, securing a dominant 8–1 victory and continuing its strong start to the season.
Isabel Spruill, who plays on the fifth court, spoke about the opponents she is looking forward to facing later in the season.
“Every opponent is our focus, but I’m especially ready to play Terry Sanford. I expect a close, competitive match, but we’re confident in our preparation and ready to fight hard and come out with the win,” said Spruill.
Kennedy Hancock, who plays on the fourth court, talked about the adjustments she had to make during her match against Purnell Swett.
“I feel that my Purnell Swett opponent was much better than my previous opponent. I had to adjust to the harder hitting style and play my very best to win against her,” said Hancock.
Faith Harden, who plays on the third court as a doubles player, talked about how she stayed focused during her match.
“I was focused on my own match instead of potentially stressing about the overall score and putting more unnecessary pressure on myself,” said Harden.
Emma Luchetta, who also plays on the third court as a doubles player, talked about the biggest surprise she has experienced while playing high school tennis.
“The biggest surprise about high school tennis so far is how competitive it is. I didn’t realize how much practice and teamwork goes into being on the team. It has been challenging, but I’ve really enjoyed learning and improving,” said Luchetta.
As freshmen and first-year tennis players, the four girls also shared what they are most looking forward to this season.
“Us four freshmen collectively agree that we are really looking forward to the millions of memories we are going to make and the greatness we are going to achieve,” said Spruill, Hancock, Harden, and Luchetta.
The Lady Colts will look to continue their undefeated season with upcoming matches against Grays Creek and Terry Sanford. The team hopes to keep building momentum and add two more wins to their season.
