Cape Fear High School held class meetings for each grade level last week, giving students important reminders and information for the upcoming school year. The 9th and 10th grade meetings took place Wednesday, August 26th, followed by 11th and 12th grade meetings on Thursday, August 27th.

According to 10th grade principal Ms. Copeland, the presentations were mostly the same for each grade level, but the amount of time spent on each topic varied. Freshmen received more detailed information because many of the topics were new to them, while sophomores received additional reminders about expectations.

For freshmen and sophomores, the meetings primarily focused on school rules and regulations. The goal was to remind students about what they should and should not do in order to help create a smooth atmosphere at Cape Fear.

For freshman Susannah Oswalt, a member of the cross-country team, the meeting also provided useful information about academics and athletics.

 “The meeting was very helpful when it came to knowing what to expect in class,” Oswalt said. 

“It was especially good for knowing exactly what grades [you need and everything for sports.”

The sophomore meeting also served as a reminder to begin thinking about their futures. Maliyah, a sophomore who chose not to provide her last name, said she plans to choose classes that will help prepare her for her career path in the coming years.

The junior meeting placed more emphasis on preparing for the ACT. Students received reminders about the test and the steps they should be taking to make sure they are prepared.

After the meeting, junior Samantha Graves said she felt more confident about the upcoming test. 

“I’m feeling confident that I can get a good ACT score that will improve my chances of getting into college,” Graves said.

Seniors focused on graduation requirements and everything they needed to accomplish before reaching graduation day, which will be held on June 7th, at the Crown Coliseum. The meeting also covered senior events and other activities leading up to graduation, like Homecoming, ACT WorkKeys, Jostens visits, etc.

Senior Destiny Bonner said the information helped her begin thinking beyond graduation.

“The information presented to me in the meeting as a senior was useful. It’s helping me prepare and think about my life after high school.” said Bonner.

Prom, which will take place in late March of next year, was another topic discussed during both the junior and senior meetings. While each grade level had different priorities, the overall message was to stay focused and make responsible decisions throughout the school year.

“We want y’all to graduate,” said Mrs. Copeland.

Emphasizing the importance of students staying on track. Each grade level has the same goal: having a successful school year. The choices students make throughout the year can help determine how successfully they reach the finish line.
