With the game on the line and a two-point lead separating the two teams, Cape Fear’s defense needed one final stop. The Colts delivered, turning away a late two-point attempt and holding on for a 15-13 victory over Jack Britt on Friday night. The win kept Cape Fear undefeated and moved the Colts to 2-0 on the season.

The game began with Cape Fear looking to establish its offense early. Quarterback Tres Daughtry gave the Colts a spark when he connected with Davis Spruill on a 60-yard pass, immediately putting Cape Fear in scoring territory. The Colts moved the ball down the field but were unable to finish the drive, turning the ball over at the Jack Britt 17-yard line. Despite the early opportunity, Cape Fear’s defense kept the game scoreless, and the first quarter ended 0-0.

Cape Fear continued to battle for its first points in the second quarter. The Colts drove deep into Jack Britt territory and reached the 10-yard line, where they faced a fourth-and-10. After an offsides penalty moved the Colts five yards closer to the goal line, Cape Fear had another chance to keep the drive alive.

The Colts took advantage of the opportunity. On fourth-and-five, Daughtry delivered a shovel pass to senior Jackson Carte, who took the ball into the end zone for Cape Fear’s first touchdown of the night. The score put the Colts ahead 7-0.

“It felt good, being able to go out and show what we are able to do. Feels great seeing all my teammates eat, and all the hype coming our way. I love watching us take back what we lost last year,”said senior Jackson Carte 

Cape Fear’s defense continued to keep the Buccaneers out of the end zone, allowing the Colts to take their 7-0 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the locker room, Cape Fear’s offense continued to make plays. Daughtry connected with Landon Underwood for a 21-yard completion, moving the Colts closer to the goal line. Cape Fear continued its drive until Roderick Williams finished it with a rushing touchdown.

“We had a great week of practice and preparations, me and all my receivers’ communication has grown over the years,” said junior Daghtry 

The Colts then successfully converted the two-point attempt, giving them an eight-point advantage at 15-7. After three quarters, Cape Fear had built itself a strong position heading into the final period.

Cape Fear entered the fourth quarter trying to protect its lead and finish off the road victory. The Colts’ defense faced increased pressure as the game moved toward its final minutes, but Cape Fear continued to fight to keep control.

Late in the fourth quarter, Cape Fear found itself clinging to a 15-13 lead. With less than two minutes remaining, the Colts needed their defense to make one final stand. Cape Fear stopped the two-point attempt, preserving its two-point advantage and securing the victory.

The final whistle sent the Colts home with a 15-13 win and a perfect 2-0 record to start the season. Cape Fear showed its ability to make big plays on offense while also coming through defensively when the game was at its most important.

The Colts will look to keep their undefeated start alive when they return home to face Westover on Sept. 11.
