Cape Fear ladies golf keeps up their 2026 season winning streak with yet another 1st place win in their third match of the season. On Monday September 14th, the third match of the season took place at Cape Fear’s home course, Baywood Golf Course. They finished the match with a team score of 268, with Sophomore Sarah Evanson placing 1st with an individual score of 81. 

Freshman and first year team member, Emma Grace Sigmon, shares her thoughts on Monday’s match. This was her first match on the high school level and she finished it with an individual score of 99.

Sigmon was asked what part of her game she thought she performed the best on Monday.

“The best part of my game today was probably my irons. They helped save me after some of my bad drives and chips, and I felt the most confident when using them,” said Sigmon.

Sigmon was also asked if there were any holes where she felt especially confident or played really well.

“I felt especially confident on hole 3, which is a par 3. I had a really good drive and later used my 6 iron to get the ball really close to the green. I almost chipped in for a birdie, and finally made the putt for par. I was really happy with how I played on that hole,” said Sigmon.

Finally, Sigmon talked about how she responds when she makes mistakes or experiences difficult holes.

“When I made a mistake or had a difficult hole, I reminded myself that it is okay to make mistakes. I tried not to let one bad shot or hole affect the rest of my round. Instead, I stayed positive and focused on doing better on the next hole,” said Sigmon. 

I also talked to another Freshman, and first year team member, Maddy Orazi, to get her thoughts and opinions on Monday’s match. This was her first match on the high school level and she finished it with an individual score of 116. 

Orazi was asked what was working best for her during Monday’s match, between driving, putting, chipping, or iron play. 

“What was working best for me during the match was chipping. I definitely think I’d saved a bunch of triple bogeys, because I could chip up close to the hole and just putt it in if I had a bad iron shot or drive,” said Orazi. 

Orazi was asked if she changed anything about her strategy or approach during the match. 

“During the match I did change a bunch of stuff. Normally during practices or just working on my skill, I would hit over the water. Instead during the tournament I just punched out into the fairway instead of hitting over the water just in case I did hit into the water and be set back by a penalty stroke,” said Orazi.

Finally, Orazi talked about one thing she would keep doing and one thing she would work on looking back on Monday’s match.

“One thing from my round that I would keep doing is just playing it safe for sure. One thing that I would work on is not getting in my head if I make a mistake,” said Orazi. 

These two freshmen have been putting in the work at practice and on their own team, so much so that they were picked to play in the match on Monday. These girls are ready to continue working hard and excited for what the rest of the season, as well as seasons ahead hold for them and their team members.
