Our Cape Fear High School Ladies Tennis team seniors have finished out their final season on the court, knowing that this season has been about more than just wins. It has been about making the most of their final season playing alongside the teammates and friends they have grown with over the years.
As the season comes to an end, the seniors are facing a moment that seemed far away when they first stepped onto the court as younger players. It is their final match wearing the Cape Fear jersey.
For these seniors, tennis has provided more than an opportunity to compete. It has given them memories, friendships, and experiences that they will carry with them long after their final match.
“I am so blessed to have played tennis with all of these girls! We have had such a strong and joyous season so far, and will continue to do so. I will always cherish the memories that I am taking away from this season and all of my seasons. Thank you coaches, teammates, and family for giving me the opportunity to do this sport,” said Aslyn Autry.
Throughout the season, the senior players have had the opportunity to lead by example, whether that meant encouraging younger teammates, competing through difficult matches, or simply being a consistent presence at practice.
Their experience has made them an important part of the team, but their impact goes beyond what can be measured on a scoreboard. They have helped shape the team’s culture and have given younger players an example of what it means to compete while supporting the people around them.
“I’ve had a great season starting-wise staying undefeated on my court. However, I’ve had an even better season with my teammates. They are some of the kindest and funniest people who I will miss when I leave! I am thankful for the numerous coaches I’ve had through my 3 seasons, ending with some of the best for my last season,” said Emma Stephens.
Now, as their final season winds down, the seniors have had to balance the excitement of finishing their high school careers with the realization that they will not have another season together.
For years, the routine has been familiar, practices after school, matches during the week, long conversations with teammates, and the anticipation that comes with stepping onto the court. Soon, those moments will become memories.
“My senior year has been such a whirlwind. I actually can’t believe that it’s almost over. I’ve grown so much, mentally, physically, and emotionally since my freshman year. I’m beyond grateful for every opportunity that I’ve been given and I’m so excited to see where the rest of this season leads me,” said Alissa Fulghum.
While the end of the season marks the conclusion of their high school tennis careers, it also represents the beginning of a new chapter. Each senior will leave Cape Fear with her own plans for the future, but the lessons learned through tennis competing under pressure, working with teammates, and continuing to push forward will remain with them.
Most importantly, their final season has given them one last opportunity to share the court with the people who made their high school tennis experience special.
“Senior night was a mix of so many emotions. I’ve been playing all of my high school career so saying goodbye to the program felt weird. We played Scotland in a double header winning every single match. Overall it’s been an amazing 4 years and I can’t wait to see what the next years hold for the rest of the team,” said Haylee Hall.
When the final match is over and the rackets are put away, the seniors’ time on the Cape Fear ladies’ tennis team will officially come to an end. No matter ending, the friendships, lessons and memories built over their years together will extend far beyond the final point.
For the seniors, the season may be ending, but the impact of the time they spent together will not.
