The Cape Fear Softball team started their season off with two games last week. The Colts finished the week with two big wins against Triton and St. Pauls.

Tuesday, the Colts were on the road at Triton. For the first inning, the score remained 0-0. The ladies came out strong in the top of the second inning scoring 4, but allowing Triton to score 2. After that, the Ladies couldn’t be stopped.

The Colts proceeded to score 7 more runs over the next 5 innings. A’mari Adams had an outstanding performance batting 5-5 with five singles, three RBIs, and two stolen bases. Another key player at the plate was Kalilah De La Cruz. De La Cruz was 3-4 with three singles, a stolen base, and 3 runs scored.

Their defense was solid, only committing two errors in 7 innings. Karalina Tomasic started the game in the circle and set the tone for the game. Tomasic pitched two innings, and was then relieved by Freshman McKinley Kolasa, who came in to finish the game. Both girls combined to give up four hits and striking out 6.

“Even though I wasn’t able to compete to my full ability because of a slight arm injury it was still fun to have my teammates back me up and support me the whole way throughout the game,” said Tomasic. “Overall I would say it was a successful game.”

The Colts returned to Cape Fear with their first win of the season 11-2. That gave the ladies two days to prepare for their home opener against St. Pauls on Friday.

The energy was high and the stands were packed, and the Colts were ready to deliver, impressing the fans with another victory over St. Pauls 22-0.

The Ladies were ready to play. Heading out into the top of the first, only allowing one runner on, St. Pauls was quickly shut down. The Colts scored 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning and didn’t stop there. They continued to dominate, scoring 8 in the second and 10 in the third, the whole time not allowing one run for St. Pauls.

3 players batted 1.000 for the night, Senior Allie Dawson, Sophomore Addison Davis and Freshman Mckinley Kolasa. All the Ladies in the lineup had their bats going, allowing more players to come across the plate. In just 3 innings, the Colts had 18 hits total on the night.

The Colts offense wasn’t the only thing that got them through the game. Their defense made it through the game with only one error and no runs allowed. St. Pauls only had 3 hits across 4 innings. Kolasa was back in the circle Friday night striking out four and only walking one.

“We came out with a lot of energy and that’s why we played great!” said Coach Jeff McPhail.

The Lady Colts will play 3 games this week. Conference play starts Tuesday at Lumberton. They will travel to North Johnston Wednesday night and will finish the week back at home against Purnell Swett.
