On Wednesday October 9th, the Cape Fear Colts ran at Luther Britt Park which was hosted by Lumberton High School. This was the last conference meet before the Conference Championship. The Colts took on an unfamiliar course, bringing new terrain and challenges. Regardless of this the Colts refused to back down and showed what Cape Fear pride is all about.
The boys finished 1st overall with a score of 32. The team had a total of 10 runners this week with 4 placing in the top 10. Collin Shick came 1st with a time of 17:13. Chris Shick followed shortly after placing 4th with a time of 17:38. Kayden Giles was next , placing 5th with a time of 18:38. With just 2 meets remaining, the Colts are determined to keep improving until the very end.
“I feel like I did a pretty decent job. I think I could’ve done a better job preparing, but overall I think I did a good job. This team is special, we’ve been rolling all season long and just have to continue it,” said Brayden Luchetta, one of the 10 runners.
“They ran well but they lost focus and could have done better. It was great to come away with the win at Lumberton, but we know we didn’t run our best today. It’s late in the season and the guys lost a bit of focus out there, and we’ll need to sharpen up if we want to finish the season the way we know we can. We’re capable of a lot more, and this meet was a good reminder of that,” said Coach Jackie Demchock.
The girls placed 3rd with an overall score of 56. The team had a total of 7 runners this week with 2 placing in the top 10. Keziah Chambers came 2nd with a time of 22:26. Amelia Osornio was next for the Colts placing 4th with a time of 23:42. Soon after Shaddai Martell placed 12th with a time of 25:54. Despite the tough competition, the Lady Colts continue to push forward and support one another through every race.
While it wasn’t the best race for me and the course was a little confusing, I think the girls team as a whole did a great job. It has been a good season so far with all of the girls continuing to get better and better,” said team captain Anamarie Brenes.
“The girls have been consistent, finishing third again this week at Lumberton, but we know there’s still another level we can reach. We need to keep working hard, stay focused, and race with more aggression if we want to move up in the standings. The potential is there — it’s just about putting it all together when it counts,” said Coach.
The Colts continue to give their all, showing steady progress and unity across both teams. Whether setting personal records or cheering each other on, every runner demonstrates their grit. The Colts next meet will be held at the Lumbee Tribe Cultural Center on October 14th starting at 4:30pm. Make sure you come out and support your Colts for one of the last meets of the season!
