Cape Fear Girls Soccer had big conference games this week that were must-wins in order to stay in the running for a Tri-County conference championship.
On Monday, April 20th, The Lady Colts faced Purnell Swett at home.
The Colts brought home the win last time out against Purnell Swett, leaving the pitch with a 1-0 win. The ladies were looking to get a similar result this time out.
It was a back and forth game. Late into the second half, the Colts were down 2-1, and it was freshman Kelci Glunt’s moment to shine. She was up to the challenge and put the ball into the back of the net to tie the game up and take things into overtime.
The Colts showed their high level of fitness, as they continued to fight late into overtime. Purnell Swett could not withstand the constant intensity from the Colts.
The Lady Colts ended this hard-fought game with a final score of 4-2. This game was a true example of constant grit and determination from the girls.
On Wednesday, April 22nd, the Lady Colts took on the Grays Creek Bears in Colt Country for what would be a thrilling and action packed game.
The Lady Colts began the game with a slow start but later on picked up steam. Sophomore Ava Luchetta was the first to get her name on the score sheet; scoring with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Lady Colts continued to put pressure on the Bears defense and it paid off with junior Addison Gunter scoring off of a volley into the bottom right corner to finish off the half with the momentum in the favor of the Colts.
This put the Lady Colts up 2-0 heading into halftime.
The second half was no different for the Lady Colts. They continued to apply pressure both on the defensive and offensive ends of the pitch.
Later into the second half sophomore Ava Luchetta scored once again with a stunning goal from around 25 yards out.
This gave the Lady Colts just enough energy to finish out the rest of the game with a 3-0 win.
Senior Goalkeeper Emma Parson received her 5th clean sheet of the season demonstrating just how strong the Lady Colts’ defense can be.
“We are making sure to get the simple things down in practice,” said team captain Hannah McGill, “It is really important to keep our mentality on track to beat Terry Sanford and going into the playoffs.”
Make sure to travel to Terry Sanford today as the Lady Colts take on the Bulldogs in the “Battle of the Blues” for a conference decider.
