Have you ever just needed a friendly face or smile in the morning at school? Well that could be provided by our teacher of the week Kathy Lee! Mrs. Lee currently teaches two different science classes here at Cape Fear. Everyone who has Mrs. Lee loves her and knows she is a teacher who cares and wants the best for her students.
Mrs. Lee is known throughout Cape Fear as an overwhelmingly positive teacher. She knew teaching was for her in high school. She explained how her high school experience led her to this decision.
“I had a really mean teacher in high school that thought fussing and belittling students would make them better,” she says.
Along with a bad teacher, she also had a great teacher who encouraged her students. Seeing both types of teachers made Mrs. Lee understand how important a good teacher is to students. She said she wants to teach the subject, but also uplift her students.
Mrs. Lee furthered her education at UNC Pembroke where she received her bachelor’s degree and ECU for her masters. For the past 18 years, Mrs. Lee has been teaching school at Mac Williams Middle School and Cape Fear High School. At Mac Williams she taught 7th and 8th grade science and now teaches earth/environmental science and AP environmental science which is grades 9-12. Next semester she will also be teaching biology.

Mrs. Lee’s favorite part of teaching is the students. Like many teachers, she loves to build relationships with them and encourages them to perform to their highest potential.
Mrs. Lee is also a Christian and loves to show Christ to those she encounters every day. She loves learning more about God’s plan for her life. She is also the youngest of four children, and she remains very close with her older siblings.
In her spare time Mrs. Lee loves to play with her sweet dog, Bailey, and spend time planning her next trip with her daughter. She also loves to swim and take walks outside to get active. She can frequently be found taking walks around campus in her free time.
Mrs. Lee has a daughter named Miranda who is a junior here at Cape Fear. She considers Miranda her travel partner, as they have travelled together to many interesting places. That being said, Ms Lee absolutely loves to travel.
“One of my favorite trips was when I was blessed to go on a 9 day mission trip to Namibia on the continent of Africa.” she says. She described this trip as a once in a lifetime experience. The highlight of the trip for Mrs. Lee was meeting the people and spending time in their homes, schools, churches, and camps. Once the mission was over the group she was with traveled to South Africa for a few days of Safari.
“The beauty of the country and the incredible opportunity to be up close to such majestic creatures in their natural habitats was truly magnificent,” Mrs. Lee said.
Having Mrs. Lee as a teacher is wonderful! “I look for joy and happiness everyday!” she says. Being in class with a teacher who has a positive attitude and wants to help really encourages students to do their best.
One of her former students said, “Mrs. Lee’s class was one I used to look forward to and enjoyed because she was a teacher who was funny, caring and just all around nice.”
It is easy to see why Ms. Lee is so loved, respected and admired here in Colt Country. She is simply the best teacher!
Congratulations, Ms. Lee! You deserve it!
